America's Top Roofing Shingle Brands Compared

An independent, side-by-side comparison of the six manufacturers that dominate the American shingle market. No sponsorships, no affiliate deals -- just published specs, warranty documents, contractor feedback, and homeowner experiences.

The Six Brands That Roof America

Asphalt shingles cover roughly 80% of residential roofs in the United States. Six manufacturers produce the vast majority of those shingles: GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, IKO, Atlas, and TAMKO. Together, they account for more than 90% of the North American shingle market.

Each brand offers multiple product lines ranging from budget 3-tab shingles to premium designer options. They compete on durability, color technology, warranty coverage, contractor certification programs, and price. We review each brand independently below, with links to our full individual brand guides.

How We Evaluate Brands

Every brand review is based on four key criteria. We do not accept compensation from manufacturers -- our assessments come from published specs, warranty documents, contractor interviews, and homeowner feedback.

Product Range

We evaluate how many product lines each brand offers across different price tiers. A strong brand provides options for budget-conscious homeowners, mid-range buyers, and premium customers -- plus specialty products for high-wind and high-impact zones.

Warranty Strength

We read the actual warranty documents, not the marketing summaries. We compare base coverage, prorated vs. non-prorated periods, transferability to new owners, workmanship coverage, and the fine-print exclusions that can void your claim.

Contractor Network

The best warranty in the world means nothing if no certified installer is available in your area. We assess the size and quality of each brand's certified contractor program and how easy it is for homeowners to find qualified installers locally.

Real-World Performance

Published specs tell one story. We also look at UL 2218 impact test results, wind resistance ratings, real-world hail damage reports, contractor installation feedback, and long-term durability data to assess how each brand actually performs on roofs.

We Are Independent

American Roofing Guide does not sell shingles, install roofs, or receive compensation from any shingle manufacturer. Our brand reviews are based entirely on published specifications, warranty documents, certified contractor program details, contractor feedback, and homeowner experiences. When we recommend a product, it is because the data supports it -- not because we were paid to say it. Learn more about how we operate.

Roofing Shingle Brands FAQ

Common questions about choosing between the major shingle manufacturers.

There is no single best brand. GAF is the top choice for contractor availability and market support. Owens Corning leads in color technology and options. CertainTeed offers premium quality and the strongest warranty programs. IKO delivers solid value at a lower price point. Atlas is the top pick for hail-prone regions with its Scotchgard protector. TAMKO is the best budget-friendly option. The right brand depends on your priorities, climate, and which certified contractors are available in your area.

Both are excellent manufacturers with strong product lines. GAF has the wider contractor network and the largest market share. Owens Corning has better color technology with the TruDefinition line and a strong reputation for innovation. The decision often comes down to which brand your preferred contractor is certified with, since both GAF Master Elite and Owens Corning Platinum Preferred programs offer enhanced warranties that only apply when their certified contractors do the installation.

CertainTeed's SureStart Plus and GAF's Golden Pledge are the strongest warranty programs in the industry when installed by certified contractors. Both offer 50-year non-prorated coverage with workmanship guarantees. Standard manufacturer warranties across all six brands are fairly similar at 25-30 year limited lifetime. The key difference is the enhanced warranty you get through certified contractor installation, which covers both materials and labor.

TAMKO and IKO typically have the lowest pricing among the six major brands, with installed costs roughly 10-15% below GAF and Owens Corning for comparable product tiers. However, cheapest is not always most economical. Warranty coverage, contractor availability, and long-term durability all factor into total cost of ownership. A slightly more expensive shingle with a stronger warranty and better contractor support can cost less over the life of the roof.

Insurance companies care about shingle class ratings, particularly Class 4 impact resistance, not the brand name. All six major brands offer Class 4 impact-resistant shingles that qualify for insurance discounts of 10-35% in many states. What matters to insurers is the UL 2218 rating and wind resistance certification, not whether the shingle is made by GAF, Owens Corning, or any other manufacturer.

Atlas StormMaster Shake and GAF Timberline AS II are among the highest-rated shingles for hail resistance. CertainTeed NorthGate and Owens Corning Duration FLEX also perform well in UL 2218 Class 4 impact testing. Atlas is particularly notable because all StormMaster products include Scotchgard Protector from 3M, which also prevents algae staining. For homeowners in hail-prone states like Texas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Oklahoma, any of these options will qualify for insurance discounts.
